Swiss start-up Annanow has often been compared to Uber. Like the ride-hailing service, the company uses on-demand service apps to deliver online purchases for shops. Anyone can deliver, from taxi drivers and couriers to the man on the street. But the comparison with Uber ends with technology, insists CEO Patrick Keller. The coronavirus showed us the gig economy must be more socially responsible, he says. While delivery businesses like his thrived during the outbreak, demand for other freelancers collapsed, leaving many unemployed with few, if any, social protections.
