Before the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan began, there was only one brigade of the Indian Army, comprising three units with about 2,500 soldiers, guarding 300 km of Indian territory, along the Line of Control (LoC) between Zojila and Leh. It meant that one unit was responsible for close to 100 km of territory, a task which was next to impossible. These sectors are the crucial backbone for the logistics requirements of the army from Zojila to the world’s highest army deployment.
4 जुलाई का दिन कारगिल युद्ध के लिए बहुत ही अहम और एक निर्णायक दिन था. क्योंकि 4 जुलाई 1999 को ही भारतीय सेना ने कारगिल की सबसे अहम चोटी टाइगर हिल को पाकिस्तान कब्जे से मुक्त करवाकर वहां फिर से तिरंगा झंडा फहराया था. टाइगर हिल को फतेह करना भारतीय सेना की सबसे अहम कामयाबी थी. क्योंकि इस विजय के बाद भारतीय सेना ने सामरिक रूप से बढ़त हासिल कर ली. और उसके बाद पाकिस्तानी सेना को पूरे कारगिल से खदेड़ना आसान हो गया था.
